Atherstone Dickens Night

Summer in the Square July 2007

14 July 2007

Over the couple of weeks before the event and more so during the final couple of days I looked at the dreaded weather forecast for Saturday 14 July our Summer In The square 2007 date, it appeared that even the weather forecasters were confused as sometimes the forecast was changing by the hour.

During the last 2 days it looked as though our worst fears were to come true " dreaded rain " which would destroy our event as all of it is in the open air of the market square, Friday came and so did more rain OH DEAR what do we do! Then Saturday came and what a change IT HAD STOPPED RAINING  and hardly a cloud in the sky. Great news to us all our event was destined to get fine weather.

2pm came and we met in the square to start setting up (still dry) 3pm Millichamps trailer arrived (our stage for the entertainment) shortly after our rock group Dead Heat arrived then the PA system shortly followed by our friends from @nker Radio we were all the saying how lucky we were to have what is quite a rare dry day.

The first sound out of the speakers was Dead Heat accompanied by the crys can you turn it down a bit, their sound check completed then the Guys from @nker Radio took over to set up their gear. All was set and ready to go 5 pm came and off we went @nker radio had the first set suitably warming up a fast growing crowd next was a superb young singer from Burbage called Ella-May only 14 years old but wow what a voice, followed by Dead Heat our local rock band who gave us 45 minutes of great rock music, next came Tammy King a true Atherstone star, and last but by no means least Beverley a great professional singer from Birmingham.

All of the acts were linked together by the superb @nker Radio team who played great music and set games for the many children in the crowd and were a truly great set of guys.

11 pm came and it was time to wind everything up Beverley sang her encore, @nker radio played their last disc all the thanks were said and we set about the task of clearing up the square.

By 12.30 am we had the market square looking tidy, all the litter collected, all the gear stowed away, then we went for our final drink at the Market Tavern and to reflect on the success that we had.

It was great to see the number of family groups that were out enjoying the night from grandparents to young children all age groups were covered, there were many comments indicating the lots of people would like to see this a more regular event some saying that it should be held monthly (a little ambitious i feel but it shows the need for such nights in Atherstone).

Comment from the licensee of the Tavern that tonight he had broken all records, Anthony from the Red lion said that the event had a positive effect on his night along with The Three Tuns.

It only leaves me to say an enormous thanks to everyone that helped on the night and gave sponsorship to the event i will not mention any names at this stage as i would hate to miss anyone out.
